Hands Across The Sea (HATS) 2023/24 Handing Over Ceremony

On Tuesday, 25th of February 2025, the Handing Over Ceremony of books from Hands Across the Sea (HATS) was held at the National Public Library Conference Room under the theme “Keeping Literacy in Focus in Challenging Times.”

With funding provided by the Mustique Charitable Foundation (MCF), HATS will distribute over 3,000 books to 18 Primary and Secondary schools across St. Vincent and the Grenadines. This funding includes two customized book collections dedicated to Children with Special Needs. Additionally, HATS will supply eight remedial kits to Secondary schools in St. Vincent.

In addition to the 18 school libraries funded by MCF, HATS will provide books and school supplies to each school in the Grenadines, which was affected by Hurricane Beryl’s passing.

At the ceremony, Enna Bullock, from Literacy Link – Hands Across the Sea, expressed her sincere gratitude to the Mustique Charitable Foundation. Enna stated, “Literacy is a human right and should be seen as a fundamental part of human life.” She implored teachers to utilize the libraries within the schools as they are equipped with the tools needed to improve literacy and numeracy in the Vincentian children. Enna added that these libraries need to be used as a learning hub for students to begin to feel comfortable in an environment where they can “sit and just read a good book.”

Natalia Gill, Project Director – Mustique Charitable Foundation, commended HATS for their initiative to include the Schools for Special Needs in St. Vincent as a part of the 2024-2025 project. She stated, “This project is not just about providing books; it’s about cultivating a culture of literacy that empowers our students not only to learn but to grow, engage with the world, and shape their futures.” Natalia closed by speaking to the students who were present at the handover; she encouraged them to “take full advantage of the opportunities presented to you. Let these books be more than just words on a page; let them be windows into new worlds and avenues for your personal growth”.

HATS and MCF are united in exploring new horizons, leading with vision, determination, and a deep commitment to the well-being of the communities throughout St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
