Lowmans Hill, St Vincent

Applied Associate Degree in Agricultural Science and Entrepreneurship

Pursuing studies in agricultural entrepreneurship was a natural choice as I have always been surrounded by various facets of the agricultural industry. Growing up in Lowmans Hill. I’ve witnessed many of my family and neighbours rely on agriculture as a source of income. Consequently, I have developed an interest in pursuing a career in agricultural engineering. Most young people tend to shy away from such a hands on career as “working the land” as it may not be as glamourous as many other career choices, but I aspire to work alongside other outstanding individuals in this country’s agricultural sector to enhance the agricultural industry of St. Vincent and the Grenadines and by extension the entire region.

No one is without need and an education at any level is costly. Every bit counts. I am extremely grateful and highly indebted to the Mustique Charitable Foundation for selecting me as a recipient of this bursary which would undoubtedly ease my family’s financial burden as well as serve as added motivation towards achieving my goals. In my opinion college can be very challenging, but I am very determined about what I want to become and working towards it in every possible way I can. I have never received assistance before and this will be a great motivation for me and good help to my parents. Richland Park, St Vincent

Applied Associate Degree in Hospitality Studies

My name is Antonell Shallow from Richland Park, I am 26 years old and the programme I’m doing is the Associate degree in Hospitality Studies. Getting my associate degree is just a stepping stone; I would love to further my studies in hospitality management and mixology.

My dream is to one day open my own bar and restaurant and/or a bed and breakfast. From a young age I was always taught to be independent, and when I was able to work I started as a simple waitress; I got to meet new people from all over the world, was able to share my culture and make guests feel welcome or make my island a home away from home it made me feel proud to be a Vincentian. My mother always told me do something that you love so that every day you would be happy and always be in element and for me making cocktails is a passion of mine. I love the idea of taking different flavors and turning it into an extraordinary cocktail that will make someone happy no matter who they are.

The road to success is not an easy road and I’m making the ultimate sacrifice. Being the eldest of three I made a promise to my mother on her dying bed that I will take care of my sisters, the youngest is the only one attending school and the money that I worked and saved I know that it won’t last long and in order to make a better life and example for her I decided to pursue my dreams so I can help contribute to make her dreams come true. I wanted her to see that dreams can come true if you have the discipline, remain humble and hard work. Success comes with sacrifice and I’ve been sending myself to school for the past year and I would be honored and grateful to gain this assistance so the remainder of my stay at the Division of Technical and Vocational Education is successful so that I can prove that dreams can and will come true.

Walking Tall Project

Pediatric Scoliosis Surgery Mission Team

May 2017

  • 21 children receiving diagnostic evaluations (14 SVG, 5 St. Lucia, 2 Grenada)
  • 9 surgeries ( 1 child, 8 teenagers)
  • 3 SVG children received surgeries. (others anticipated for surgery in May did not due to school exams) These children will be prioritized for the next two missions.

WPP Walking Tall - Surgical Team

Upon last fall’s gift confirmation from The Mustique Charitable Foundation, World Pediatric Project sprung into action to schedule a first time, second scoliosis/ spine repair team within a year to St. Vincent through the Walking Tall program to further address the significant need and waiting list of children and teenagers afflicted with scoliosis. Given the procedure complexity, surgical expertise needed, and cost of the hardware implants, without assistance from World Pediatric Project and the generous support of The Mustique Charitable Foundation and the spine hardware vendor, in this case, Medtronic, few of these children would have a chance for relief of this progressively debilitating condition. The toll of untreated scoliosis is all encompassing, from sometimes dire medical consequences to the lungs and other vital organs of the body, to the social and emotional effects of appearance and inability to participate normally in physical activities.

An unforeseen additional “gift” from The Mustique Charitable Foundation was the opportunity to invite the involvement of a new WPP spine team. Lead surgeon, Dr. Steven Hwang and his team from Shriners Hospital for Children– Philadelphia quickly impressed the WPP team on the ground in St. Vincent and the staff at Milton Cato Memorial Hospital in their skill, efficiency, and overall joy they exhibited to be working with WPP in St. Vincent. By all involved, including Dr. Hwang’s enthusiasm to continue he and his team’s involvement for future surgery missions to St. Vincent, World Pediatric Project is so pleased to have gained another outstanding addition to our ranks of pediatric specialist surgery teams!

With more than $2 million investment in state-of-the-art equipment made possible by several generous contributors, and the facility space at Milton Cato Memorial Hospital contributed by the government of St. Vincent, this modern facility will now support increasing the volume of WPP teams to the region and capability to perform additionally complex surgeries.

Velanie, age 14 from Georgetown, SVG , has six brothers and loves to hang out with friends. She can’t wait to get better and walk with her friends to get French fries! She is feeling more confident than ever now with her surgery completed and has returned to school which makes her very, very happy.

“I can walk around now feeling happy that the problem is solved… I stand in front of the mirror and smile… After everything is over I’ll stand in front of the mirror and say, it was all worth it . Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!”

Text message to WPP team leader after Velanie returned home.

15-year-old Shenniella from Richland Park, St. Vincent, was the last surgery for the week and 57th patient receiving spine repair surgery since WPP first began this surgery in-country 6 years ago.

She definitely won the sweetest smile award! Dr. Hwang, was amazed how brave she and all of the kids were.

For 12-year-old Sue-Nique from St. David, SVG, getting her surgery now was so important as she would soon be going through a growth spurt and her scoliosis could have gotten much, much worse over the next year.

She is oldest of four children in her family and loves to read.

She told the team she can’t wait to get back to playing her favorite sports of netball, soccer, basketball and volleyball!

Walking Tall Project 2016

Walking Tall Project

Walking Tall Project

November, 2016

The Mustique Charitable Foundation funded a World Pediatric Project scoiiosis/spinal repair team to St. Vincent in November 2016.

Scoliosis-specific team mobilization is rare given the complexity of this type of surgery and the costs associated with the necessary spine hardware implants, typically $50-$60k in cost per patient.

  • 65 children received diagnostic evaluations
  • 9 children scheduled for surgery with the most complex or those traveling the furthest being scheduled for the earliest surgery slots.

6-year-old Carlos, who had spine implant surgery last fall, returned for a rod lengthening procedure.

Children and their families came from throughout St. Vincent as well as from further distances in the region. They’ve been prepared in advance to bring their needed medical records and x-rays to allow the WPP team to work efficiently during clinic day.

Junelle

Junelle was so happy when she learned World Pediatric Project’s spine repair team was scheduled to travel to St. Vincent and that she had been accepted for surgery. A slender 14-year-old teenager, Junelle’s severe 78-degree spine curvature was not only physically detrimental, but also socially devastating. For Junelle, this surgery meant the end of an era of being teased and ashamed that she did not look like everyone else.

While Junelle was all smiles the day she was admitted to MCMH, her mother felt the normal nervous emotions of family members prior to surgery. Her fears were relieved upon hearing the happy news of the successful surgery and her “baby girl” was doing great.

Junelle was upright and walking the next day, and her mother could not wait to have a photo of the fabulous doctors that took such good care of her cherished daughter.

WPP Walking Tall Project - Delroy

Delroy

18-year-old Delroy is charming, polite, and very brave. He arrived for clinic day and his probable surgery without any family accompanying him. Perhaps his older age also contributed to the many questions and fears he exhibited before his surgery day.

Being there without a parent, he clung to WPP Country Director, Jackie King as a mother figure to him during the week.

After his successful spine repair surgery, everyone, in- cluding family members of other patients, helped look after him.

He was exuberant with his gratitude and relief that the surgery was over and pain was manageable.

I live in a single parent family headed by my mom, with the company of two brothers. This assistance will be of great help to me because my mom is unemployed and does her best to support me through College. I have potential but never had the financial assistance needed. Being a recipient of this bursary will motivate me to do much better. After graduating, I hope to work as a contractor or further my studies in building construction.

Having gained acceptance into the Agricultural Science and Entrepreneurship programme, I sought part time employment as a cashier in an effort to pay for my college expenses and also purchase supplies for my seedling nursery business. I established this business three years ago with intentions to expand and in an effort to learn more about the field of agriculture. I aspire to become the most outstanding student in my programme, and to take my knowledge, experience and love for agriculture and make the best of it by expanding and adding other innovative ideas to my business. This will lead to a successful business and also allow me to create employment for other students part time or full time.

AAS Hospitality Studies

Born under the Libra sign, my hobbies are cooking, singing, dancing, watching movies and meeting people but most of all I love the Lord. I obtained my primary and secondary level education at the Kingstown Preparatory School and the Bishop’s College Kingstown respectively. After being successful in the 2015 CSEC examination I opted to pursue the Associate Degree Programme in Hospitality Studies at the SVGCC: Division of Technical and Vocational Education because my goal in life is to work in the hospitality industry as an entrepreneur. After God, education is the key to success, so the knowledge and skills acquired through this programme will give me a foundation for higher education to further enhance my knowledge and skills to aid me in achieving my long term goal.

AAS Hospitality Studies

I was raised by my grandmother in the rural community of Barrouallie, who, in spite of her willingness, is not financially able to sustain my college education. This scholarship is therefore a gift from God and I am very grateful to have been selected. After college, I wish to attend the University of the West Indies to pursue a BSc. in Hospitality and Tourism Management. This will also help in the development of tourism here in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. I want to express my gratitude to The Mustique Charitable Foundation for affording me this opportunity to successfully complete my College education.

Glen, St Vincent

AAS Hospitality Studies

I am the sixth child for my parents and I currently reside at Glen with my father. Growing up in a large family taught me to learn from the mistakes of others and be motivated by their achievements. Losing my sister in 2014 was hard; I lost a friend and also a hero. One thing that she taught me was to never give up on myself.

I aspire to become a chef and operate my own restaurant. Growing up I’ve always dreamed of serving individuals of all cultures, just like Gordon Ramsay.

As a Hospitality student I’ve learned how important it is to respect, appreciate, accommodate and serve everyone with a smile, and by learning these skills I can make my lecturers, parents and family proud of me. I am honoured to be awarded with this scholarship and now I will work even harder to achieve my goals.

Petit Bordel, St Vincent

AAS Business Studies: Accounting

I hail from the predominantly farming community of Petit Bordel, where hanging out on the block and resorting to the hills are ways of life. I grew up in a single parent household where my late grandmother was the sole breadwinner, which simply means it was not easy. During the 90s, having passed the then Common Entrance exams with flying colours, I attended the Troumaca Ontario Secondary School but due to lack of finance, was unable to meet the requirements to go on to College, however I never gave up and rewrote all necessary subjects in 2011 and was successful.

I became a mother in 2013, which gave me a new meaning to life, a new reason for living, and thus was overwhelmed when I was awarded a place at the St.Vincent and the Grenadines Community College, Division of Technical and Vocational Education. Being an aspiring Accountant, I set out to master this field by gaining all the knowledge that I possibly can through further studies.

Beside academics, I am also a jovial person who enjoys travelling and interacting with persons of diverse backgrounds. I am honoured to be selected for this newly implemented scholarship programme and this will be an additional driving force for me to continue to excel. And as I continue on this journey, I will forever keep in mind that “nothing limits excellence.”

I am 18 year old Raasikh John, I am originally from Lowmans Hill where I spent most of my childhood years. I grew up in a single parent household where my mother was the only provider, which was not easy due to the lack of finances. I am now residing in Questelles with my mother and three siblings.

I began my primary education at the Lowmans Leeward Anglican school after which I went to the St.Vincent Grammar School where I discovered my liking for solving financial problems and from that moment I realized I wanted to pursue a career in Accounting. After graduating from the St.Vincent Grammar School I started pursuing my dreams of becoming an Accountant at the St.Vincent and the Grenadines Community College: Division of Technical and Vocational Education. From here on I am hoping to further my studies at a university.

In my spare time I enjoy doing track and field for I am a very athletic person. I would like to thank the Mustique Charitable Foundation for providing me with this scholarship for it will be very beneficial in achieving my goal.
